Embracing the fight for social justice together!🌏

Dear colleagues, partners and friends,

The start of this year has been challenging, shaped by a geopolitical context that forces us to confront uncomfortable realities. In particular, the values of equity, diversity and inclusion have been openly questioned in ways that are deeply troubling.

Like many of you probably, I too experienced a state of shock, initially struggling to fully grasp the gravity of what was being said and how it was being communicated.

In navigating this journey of maintaining the fight for social justice, I have been reminded of two key lessons. First, I recognised the importance of stepping aside. Taking a break — away from the relentless noise of the media — has given me the space to refocus on what truly matters and regain personal power. In doing so, I have reconnected with my deep-rooted belief that the world is better when every individual is fully recognised as a complete human being, a rights-holder and an equal.

Secondly, I have come to realise again that the struggle for equality and social justice can only advance through collective resistance. It is in unity that we find our strength, and I am deeply grateful to have crossed paths with so many remarkable individuals.

Together, let’s continue this journey towards a more just and equal world!

Embedding equity and inclusion in technical and vocational education and training in Africa!

Extension of the collaboration with the Skills Initiative for Africa (SIFA):

  • SIFA, an initiative of the African Union Commission and AUDA-NEPAD with support from GIZ, is committed to improving the occupational prospects of young people across Africa.
  • Together, we are working to place inclusion at the heart of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) at the African Union level.
  • We are developing a repository of tools and case studies on mainstreaming disability, gender and migration in TVET centres.

Finding inspiration to resist and act!

In times of backlash against diversity and inclusion, I seek sources of hope and resistance. Here are my current top 3 inspirations:

  • Reflecting on the power of boycott: In a world strongly driven by profit and sales, this short 10-minute video retraces the history and impact of collective economic resistance – and shares key elements for an effective boycott: watch Do Boycotts Actually Work? By Roots of resistance on PBS
  • How shooting simple video revealed the vital role of migration and diversity: Just before recent elections, some German hospitals and restaurants released viral videos showing how much our workforce and society depend on migrant people. Without them, many services would simply stop functioning.
  • Remaining inspired: I find strength in the words of Nobel Prize-winning author and equality activist Annie Ernaux: “Fighting is endless. But after all, why not? It is good to fight.’ (In an interview by La Déferlante – In French)

And you – What gives you hope? How do you reclaim your power to act? I would love to hear from you!
